hira̭ṇyaśṛṅgaṃ॒-va~rṷṇa॒-mprapa̭dye tī॒rtha-mmḙ dehi॒ yāci̭taḥ |
I seek refuge in Lord Varuna, who possesses the golden horn of knowledge; O Lord, grant me a sacred place for purification as I humbly beseech Thee.
ya॒nmayā̭ bhu॒ktama॒sādhṷ̄nā-mpā॒pebhya̭śca pra॒tigra̭haḥ |
Whatever wrong I have committed by consuming forbidden food or by accepting gifts from those who are sinful, may I be cleansed of it.
yanme॒ mana̭sā vā॒cā॒ ka॒rma॒ṇā vā dṷṣkṛta॒-ṅkṛtam |
Whatever evil I have committed through my thoughts, my words, or my actions, may I be purified of it.
tanna॒ indro॒ varṷṇo॒ bṛha॒spatiḥ̭ savi॒tā ca̭ punantu॒ punaḥ̭ punaḥ |
May Indra, Varuna, Brihaspati, and Savita purify me again and again from all such transgressions.
namo॒-'gnaye᳚-'psu॒mate॒ nama॒ indrā̭ya॒ namo॒ varṷṇāya॒ namo vāruṇyai̭ namo॒-'dbhyaḥ ||
yada॒pā-ṅkrū॒raṃ-ya~da̭me॒dhyaṃ-ya~da̭śā॒nta-ntadapa̭gacchatāt |
Salutations to the Fire that dwells in the waters; salutations to Indra, to Varuna, to the consort of Varuna, and to the Waters themselves. May all that is cruel, impure, or restless within the waters depart from me.
a॒tyā॒śa॒nāda̭tī-pā॒nā॒-dya॒cca u॒grātpra̭ti॒grahā᳚t |
From the sins arising from excessive eating, excessive drinking, and the acceptance of gifts from improper or fierce sources, I seek release.
tanno॒ varṷṇo rā॒jā॒ pā॒ṇinā᳚ hyava॒marśatu |
May King Varuna touch me with his hand and purify me of all such faults.
so̭-'hama̭pā॒po vi॒rajo॒ nirmu॒kto mṷktaki॒lbiṣaḥ̭ |
Thus, may I become free from sin, free from stain, liberated, and cleansed of all guilt.
nāka̭sya pṛ॒ṣṭha-mārṷhya॒ gacche॒d brahma̭salo॒katām |
Ascending to the summit of the celestial realm, may I attain the state of communion with the Supreme Being.
yaścā॒psu varṷṇa॒ssa pu॒nātva̭ghamarṣa॒ṇaḥ |
May the Lord Varuna, who dwells within the waters and who is the destroyer of all sins, purify me.
i॒ma-mmḙ gaṅge yamune sarasvati॒ śutṷdri॒-stomagṃ̭ sacatā॒ paru॒ṣṇiyā |
O Ganga, Yamuna, Sarasvati, Shutudri, and Parushni, accept this hymn of mine.
a॒si॒kni॒yā ma̭rudvṛdhe vi॒tasta॒yā-''rjī̭kīye śṛṇu॒hyā su॒ṣoma̭yā |
Listen to my prayer, O Asikni, Marudvrdha, Vitasta, Arjikiya, and Sushoma.
ṛ॒ta-ñca̭ sa॒tya-ñcā॒bhī᳚ddhā॒-ttapa॒so-'dhya̭jāyata |
From the intense heat of spiritual austerity, Cosmic Order (Rta) and Truth (Satya) were born.
tato॒ rātri̭rajāyata॒ tata̭-ssamu॒dro a̭rṇa॒vaḥ ||
sa॒mu॒drāda̭rṇa॒vā dadhi̭ saṃva~thsa॒ro a̭jāyata |
From that, the night was born, and from that, the surging ocean. From the surging ocean, the year was created, which ordains the days and nights for all the living beings of the world.
a॒ho॒rā॒trāṇi̭ vi॒dadha॒dviśva̭sya miṣa॒to va॒śī |
The Supreme Controller of all that breathes and exists ordains the cycle of days and nights.
sū॒ryā॒ca॒ndra॒masaṷ dhā॒tā ya̭thā pū॒rvama̭kalpayat |
The Creator fashioned the sun and the moon just as they were in the previous cycles of time.
diva̭-ñca pṛthi॒vī-ñcā॒ntari̭kṣa॒-matho॒ suvaḥ̭ |
He fashioned the heavens, the earth, the mid-region (atmosphere), and the celestial realm of light.
yatpṛ̭thi॒vyāgṃ rajaḥ̭ sva॒māntari̭kṣe vi॒roda̭sī |
The dust of the earth, the self-existent atmosphere, and the two worlds (heaven and earth) were all created by Him.
i॒māggṃ stadā॒po va̭ruṇaḥ pu॒nātva̭ghamarṣa॒ṇaḥ |
May the waters, and Varuna, the destroyer of sin, purify me.
pu॒nantu॒ vasa̭vaḥ pu॒nātu॒ varṷṇaḥ pu॒nātva̭ghamarṣa॒ṇaḥ |
May the Vasus purify me, may Varuna purify me, and may the destroyer of sin purify me.
e॒ṣa bhū॒tasya̭ ma॒dhye bhuva̭nasya go॒ptā |
He is the protector of the universe, residing at the very center of all created existence.
e॒ṣa pu॒ṇyakṛ̭tāṃ-lo~॒kā॒ne॒ṣa mṛ॒tyor hi̭ra॒ṇmayam᳚ |
He is the lord of the worlds attained by the virtuous, and he is the golden light that transcends death.
dyāvā̭pṛthi॒vyor hi̭ra॒ṇmaya॒gṃ॒ saggṃ śri̭ta॒gṃ॒ suvaḥ̭ ||
sana॒-ssuva॒-ssagṃśi̭śādhi |
He is the golden essence that dwells between heaven and earth, the source of supreme light; may He sharpen our intellect and illuminate our consciousness.
ārdra॒-ñjvala̭ti॒ jyoti̭ra॒hama̭smi |
I am the effulgent, cooling light that shines forth.
jyoti॒rjvala̭ti॒ brahmā॒hama̭smi |
I am that supreme light, and I am the ultimate Reality (Brahman).
yo̭-'hama̭smi॒ brahmā॒hama̭smi |
He who I am, that I am—I am the ultimate Reality (Brahman).
a॒hama̭smi॒ brahmā॒hama̭smi |
I am the ultimate Reality (Brahman).
a॒hame॒vāha-mmā-ñjṷhomi॒ svāhā᳚ |
I offer myself as the oblation into the fire of my own Self; may this offering be complete.
a॒kā॒rya॒kā॒rya̭vakī॒rṇīste॒no bhrṷ̄ṇa॒hā gṷruta॒lpagaḥ |
Whether one has committed forbidden acts, neglected duties, broken sacred vows, stolen, harmed the innocent, or violated the sanctity of the teacher's home—
varṷṇo॒-'pāma̭ghamarṣa॒ṇa-stasmā᳚-tpā॒pā-tpramṷcyate |
Lord Varuna, the cleanser of sins and the lord of the waters, purifies all such beings, liberating them from every sin.
ra॒jobhūmi̭-stva॒māgṃ roda̭yasva॒ prava̭danti॒ dhīrāḥ᳚ |
The wise ones proclaim that You are the source of all realms and the Earth itself, setting the limits and the laws for all that exists.
ākrā᳚nthsamu॒draḥ pra̭tha॒me vidha̭rmañja॒naya̭-npra॒jā bhuva̭nasya॒ rājā᳚ |
The primordial ocean, as the King of all beings, manifested and stood forth at the very beginning, bringing forth all life into existence within the cosmic order.
vṛṣā̭ pa॒vitre॒ adhi॒sāno॒ avyḙ bṛ॒hatsomo̭ vāvṛdhe suvā॒na induḥ̭ ||
The mighty Soma, the essence that purifies, has grown vast and majestic, manifesting as the radiant drop that flows through the sacred filter.
