What is a stotra?
A Sanskrit hymn praising a deity, usually written by a saint or sage. They run from short eight-verse ashtakams to thousand-name sahasranamas, and people recite them as prayer.
Which languages and scripts can I read them in?
Every stotra is in the original Sanskrit (Devanagari), with transliteration into Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Bengali, Gujarati, Odia and Roman (IAST). Most also carry an English meaning. Tap “Read in” on any page to switch.
Are the English translations accurate?
They’re there to help you follow the meaning, not to be word-perfect. Sanskrit rarely translates cleanly, so take them as a guide. If you spot a mistake, tell us.
Do I need initiation to chant these?
No. Stotras are hymns of praise, so anyone can recite them. Some mantras need formal initiation (diksha); stotras don’t. If you follow a guru or tradition, go with their guidance.
Is there a right way or time to chant?
No fixed rule. Many people chant in the morning after a bath, aloud or silently, once or several times. Do what feels right, or follow your own tradition.
