അഥ ശ്രീനാരായണകവചമ് ।
Thus begins the auspicious and supremely protective Armor (Kavacham) of Shri Narayana.
രാജോവാച ।
The King (Parikshit) spoke (or inquired).
യയാ ഗുപ്തഃ സഹസ്രാക്ഷഃ സവാഹാന്രിപുസൈനികാന് ।
By which (divine armor), Sahasraksha (Indra), being thus protected,
ക്രീഡന്നിവ വിനിര്ജിത്യ ത്രിലോക്യാ ബുഭുജേ ശ്രിയമ് ॥ ൧॥
playfully, as it were, completely vanquished the enemy armies with their mounts, and thereafter enjoyed the glorious sovereignty of the three worlds.
ഭഗവംസ്തന്മമാഖ്യാഹി വര്മ നാരായണാത്മകമ് ।
O revered Bhagavān, please narrate to me that divine armor,
യഥാഽഽതതായിനഃ ശത്രൂന് യേന ഗുപ്തോഽജയന്മൃധേ ॥ ൨॥
which is imbued with the very essence of Narayana, and by means of which, being divinely protected, Indra conquered the assailing enemies in battle.
വൃതഃ പുരോഹിതസ്ത്വാഷ്ട്രോ മഹേന്ദ്രായാനുപൃച്ഛതേ ।
The priest, Vishvarūpa, son of Tvashta, being entreated by Mahendra (Indra) who was inquiring,
നാരായണാഖ്യം വര്മാഹ തദിഹൈകമനാഃ ശൃണു ॥ ൩॥
then revealed the armor known as Narayana. Now, listen to that account here with utmost single-mindedness.
ധൌതാങ്ഘ്രിപാണിരാചമ്യ സപവിത്ര ഉദങ്മുഖഃ ।
One should first purify one's hands and feet, perform `ācamana` (ritual sipping of water), wear the `pavitra` (sacred ring of Kuśa grass), and face north.
കൃതസ്വാങ്ഗകരന്യാസോ മന്ത്രാഭ്യാം വാഗ്യതഃ ശുചിഃ ॥ ൪॥
Having performed `aṅga-nyāsa` and `kara-nyāsa` (ritual placement of mantra parts on the body and hands) with sacred mantras, one should remain silent and be in a state of absolute purity.
നാരായണമയം വര്മ സന്നഹ്യേദ്ഭയ ആഗതേ ।
When fear or danger arises, one should mentally don the armor imbued with Narayana's essence,
പാദയോര്ജാനുനോരൂര്വോരുദരേ ഹൃദ്യഥോരസി ॥ ൫॥
by performing `nyāsa` (placement of mantras) on the feet, knees, thighs, abdomen, heart, and then on the chest.
മുഖേ ശിരസ്യാനുപൂര്വ്യാദോങ്കാരാദീനി വിന്യസേത് ।
Then, on the face and on the head, one should sequentially place the syllables starting with Om (of the mantra 'Om Namo Narayanaya'),
ഓം നമോ നാരായണായേതി വിപര്യയമഥാപി വാ ॥ ൬॥
or even in reverse order, as an alternative method.
കരന്യാസം തതഃ കുര്യാദ്ദ്വാദശാക്ഷരവിദ്യയാ ।
Thereafter, one should perform `kara-nyāsa` (placement of mantra syllables on the hands and fingers) using the potent knowledge of the twelve-syllable mantra.
പ്രണവാദിയകാരാന്തമങ്ഗുല്യങ്ഗുഷ്ഠപര്വസു ॥ ൭॥
Starting with Praṇava (Om) and ending with the letter 'ya', one should place [the syllables] on the joints of the fingers and thumb.
ന്യസേദ്ധൃദയ ഓങ്കാരം വികാരമനു മൂര്ധനി ।
One should place the syllable 'Om' on the heart, and the syllable 'vi' subsequently on the head.
ഷകാരം തു ഭ്രുവോര്മധ്യേ ണകാരം ശിഖയാ ദിശേത് ॥ ൮॥
And the syllable 'ṣa' in the middle of the eyebrows, and the syllable 'ṇa' one should direct to the topknot (śikhā).
വേകാരം നേത്രയോര്യുഞ്ജ്യാന്നകാരം സര്വസന്ധിഷു ।
One should apply the syllable 've' to the two eyes, and the syllable 'na' to all the joints.
മകാരമസ്ത്രമുദ്ദിശ്യ മന്ത്രമൂര്തിര്ഭവേദ്ബുധഃ ॥ ൯॥
Designating the syllable 'ma' as a weapon, the wise person should become an embodiment of the mantra's power.
സവിസര്ഗം ഫഡന്തം തത് സര്വദിക്ഷു വിനിര്ദിശേത് ।
That [mantra/weapon], including the visarga and ending with phaṭ, one should project in all directions.
ഓം വിഷ്ണവേ നമ ഇതി ॥ ൧൦॥
Thus [is the mantra]: Om Salutations to Vishnu.
ആത്മാനം പരമം ധ്യായേദ്ധ്യേയം ഷട്ശക്തിഭിര്യുതമ് ।
One should meditate upon the Supreme Self, the ultimate object of meditation, who is endowed with the six divine opulences.
വിദ്യാതേജസ്തപോമൂര്തിമിമം മന്ത്രമുദാഹരേത് ॥ ൧൧॥
One should utter this mantra, [meditating on Him as] the embodiment of supreme knowledge, spiritual radiance, and unwavering austerity.
ഓം ഹരിര്വിദധ്യാന്മമ സര്വരക്ഷാം
ന്യസ്താങ്ഘ്രിപദ്മഃ പതഗേന്ദ്രപൃഷ്ഠേ ।

വിമുഞ്ചതോ യസ്യ മഹാട്ടഹാസം

At the very moment He unleashed His mighty, thunderous roar, the cardinal directions themselves vibrated intensely, and even unborn life within the womb miscarried in overwhelming terror.
രക്ഷത്വസൌ മാധ്വനി യജ്ഞകല്പഃ
സ്വദംഷ്ട്രയോന്നീതധരോ വരാഹഃ ।
May that very Varaha, who embodies the sacred Yajna (sacrifice) and who with His own divine tusk majestically raised the submerged Earth from the cosmic waters, protect me on my journey (physical or spiritual).

May the venerable Lord Dhanvantari protect me from all unwholesome regimens and detrimental practices (that lead to illness and imbalance). And may Rishabha, the one who has completely subdued his self and conquered his inner being,

indeed, His divine attendants and glorious attributes – protect us from all calamities, safeguarding our intellect, senses, mind, and vital life forces.
യഥാ ഹി ഭഗവാനേവ വസ്തുതഃ സദസച്ച യത് ।
Just as the Supreme Lord alone, in reality, is both the existent and the non-existent, and indeed all that exists;

By the power of this Truth, may all our adversities be utterly annihilated.

Just as for those who have realized the oneness of the Self, He Himself remains free from all distinctions and dualities,

Yet through His own creative power (Māyā), He assumes diverse forms with distinctive ornaments and weapons, and manifests His energies;
തേനൈവ സത്യമാനേന സര്വജ്ഞോ ഭഗവാന് ഹരിഃ ।
By that very established truth (of His non-dual yet manifest nature), may the omniscient, divine Lord Hari,

The all-pervading One, always and everywhere protect us through all His myriad forms.

Never from kings, thieves, planetary influences, or even from formidable beasts like tigers, at any time whatsoever.
ഇമാം വിദ്യാം പുരാ കശ്ചിത്കൌശികോ ധാരയന് ദ്വിജഃ ।
Formerly, a certain brahmin of the Kaushika lineage, bearing this sacred knowledge (the Kavacham)...

By the power of Yogic absorption, he (the Brahmin) relinquished his own body in the desert. ||38||

One day, above that very spot, the lord of Gandharvas,

Chitraratha, surrounded by women, was passing by in his celestial vehicle, where the Brahmin's body lay departed. ||39||
ഗഗനാന്ന്യപതത്സദ്യഃ സവിമാനോ ഹ്യവാക്ശിരാഃ ।
Suddenly, he fell from the sky, along with his aerial car, head-first.

all beings bow down to him, and he is liberated from all fears. ||41||
ഏതാം വിദ്യാമധിഗതോ വിശ്വരൂപാച്ഛതക്രതുഃ ।
Having obtained this knowledge (the Narayana Kavacham) from Vishvarupa, Shatakratu (Indra)

Thus, in the glorious Srimad Bhagavatam, the great Purana, in the compendium for paramahamsas, in the Sixth Canto, ends the eighth chapter named 'The Narration of Narayana's Armor'.
